About

Funded initially by Internet NZ, Community Wireless (as a Charitable Trust) provides fast fibre internet to the Waimate District. Utilising a spare ONT port at the Waimate High School and equipment on the Silos the wireless fibre network provides access for paid subscribers to select from fixed and open connection plans.

A set percentage of subscription income going to extending the network and BYO devices for the community. Our trustees dedicate their time and expertise to the benefit of the network. We operate on a volunteer model.

Future proofing the network is managed by returning a set percentage of the subscriptions into asset replacement, maintaining and upgrading and providing local support.

Currently the network has supplied connectivity for teachers and approx 60 subscribers in Waimate. Community Wireless also supports fellow non-profits and community groups with free wifi at the Southern Canterbury A & P Showgrounds, Knox Church and Waimate Toy Library.

The plan for 2020 is to increase subscriber base, submit a proposal for free wifi network through the main street of Waimate town centre and develop an additional site to extend the network to more rural areas. The aim of Waimate Free Wifi through the town centre is to provide local businesses marketing opportunities through a digital users at local events, promotion and direct access to the Explore Waimate website. It is the aim of Community Wireless to partner with and support groups working on Economic Development of the region.

Community Wireless Trust was involved in establishing a small network in Waihi. As of 1 March 2020 the project ownership and assets have been transferred to Printec. Please contact Tim Morgan at Printec on 021 664 926 if you wish to be part of this project.
